Diabetes causes damage to the peripheral nerves known as diabetic peripheral neuropathy(DPN). Every patient with diabetes mellitus is at risk for DPN which needs accurate, proper and early detection.
Vibration Perception Threshold (VPT) is a sensitive measure of peripheral neuropathy which helps to test the loss of protective sensation of the nerves. A metal probe is placed under the toes of the patient and the voltage is increased gradually and the point of vibration is marked as VPT.
There is a positive correlation between VPT values and clinical symptoms of DPN and it can be an indicator of severity of diabetic peripheral neuropathy.
VPT score can be considered an indicator of DPN and be used to identify high-risk diabetic patients who need proper foot care to avoid foot complications, foot ulceration and probable amputation.
